5 Strategies to cope with loss in business

A business loss occurs when your business has more expenses than earnings during an accounting period. The loss means that you spent more than the amount of revenue you made. But, a business loss isn't all bad, you can use the net operating loss to claim tax refunds for past or future tax years. Failure feels like being crushed, but it’s just a feeling. In reality, it’s your opportunity to become stronger. Life is a continuous journey where we keep trying to put our best foot forward. However, sometimes even the most well-intentioned, well-researched actions do not produce the desired results, even in our financial lives. A financial loss such as unexpected expenses or business loss can strike us hard, and it can seem like life will never be the same again. However, looking at the bigger picture and taking one step at a time can help one cope with losses of any kind, including financial ones.\r\n

1 Do not take any impulsive action

When we are confronted with challenges, it is natural to want to take impulsive actions to sort these issues out as soon as possible. It is only human to sometimes give in to your emotions and resort to impulsive actions, be it running through all your savings, withdrawing all possible investments or mortgaging remaining assets. However, when it comes to your finances, this action will not serve you well. Doing so is often detrimental, though. Even if it means taking five minutes to go collect yourself, it is worthwhile. Making rational as opposed to emotional choices prevents your problems from compounding.

2 Find what can build your energy back

People who know what they need to feel better and think clearer are much more equipped for facing hardship head-on. This could be in the form of exercising, spending time with people that care about or going to an inspiring and isolating spot. Also surrounding yourself with friends, family and mentors that can be supportive during hard times can prevent feelings of isolation. These people can also be great outlets for advice or processing essential decisions.

3 Increase source of income

Rebuilding after a financial loss requires you to fill the gap left behind. This gap can be filled in two ways- increasing the cash inflow and reducing the cash outflow. Track your expenses and find small yet impactful areas to cut down your spending. You may be able to save money by doing things like planning your meals to save money at the grocery store or reducing your electric bill by cutting energy usage.

4 Take measures to avoid similar losses in future

Each failure, when seen through the right lens, is a great teacher and a stepping stone to greater success. Once you can distance your emotions from the situation, it is important to look at what happened through a microscopic lens. You must develop ways to evaluate losses, predict them and avoid them. To prevent losses, you should consider collaborating with other similar small businesses. You can work with other businesses on issues like audit practices, loss evaluation and using statistical ways of tracking trends. 5 Disassociate the failure from yourself as a person: one of the hardest parts of failing is disassociating the situation from yourself. If your company fails, it is easy to blame that 100% on yourself as a person. That is not the case, though. Everybody deals with failure in their life. Imagine what the world would be like if it were easy for everybody to get exactly what they wanted. Letting yourself become strongly attached to the failure will make handling it much more difficult. Instead, understand and recognize it while continuing to live your life, happy with what you are working toward.
